   METRO SKATEPARK - Burnaby, BC

"Creating a space for skateboarding is an intricate task that should only be left to designers with long term roots in skateboarding.
Satisfying the needs and wants of the local skateboarders, parents, neighbors, and city officials while staying in line with a budget can be a trying task that could have disastrous effects on all parties involved if not properly executed. Jim Barnum at Spectrum Skatepark Designs has proven himself more than capable with his Bonsor skateboard park design and his hands on approach with all aspects of the creation of a skateboard park. He has more than satisfied all the parties involved and has created a very popular destination for the lower mainland and north america's skateboard enthusiasts. Even before the completion of the skateboard park it was prominently featured in many national and international skateboarding publications. It is a special skateboard park for it unique contours and large area dedicated to street style skateboarding on ledges and rails which in the last decade has quickly become the most popular facet of skateboarding.

Although the park is mostly street style oriented it also boasts two very nice contoured bowl sections for both novice and expert riders.
The smaller novice course has softer curves and shallower heights with a gradual winding course of trajectory designed to improve the basic riding and turning skills involved in skateboarding. Once the novice rider has mastered that section he can move over and take advantage of the street area without getting in the way of the more experienced skaters. The expert bowl is much more challenging than the street area or the novice run.. The needs of any style or skill of skater have been taken care of at this skateboard park.

As a skateboarder for over twenty years who has grown up on the lower mainland concrete parks and having travelled internationally for the past eight years as a professional skateboarder to facilities in the USA, Europe, Australia, South Africa and Mexico and taking into consideration that the north-west of north america is renowned as the concrete park capital of the world, I would say that Bonsor stands out as one of the top parks to ride in western Canada."

"The park is divided into three sections: the street plaza; the pipe/bowl; and the snake run. The street plaza is wide open, and has plenty of obstacles. It has some fun features that will keep all terrain riders happy, such as a short wall with a tight shallow end pool tranny, flat banks, and curb hits. The bowl is a speed trip for sure, and the coping is buttery smooth. The snake run is an old school tribute with lots of curvy contours, mellow rounded lips, and a couple of random ledges thrown in for good measure. The overall package has a little bit of everything, and all-terrain skaters should have a blast here."

"As someone who has skated hundreds of skateparks I find the Bonsor skatepark in Burnaby BC to be one of the most well rounded skateparks in the Pacific Northwest. It has design elements that appeal to many different skaters tastes, be it street style, pool style, or just rolling through an "old school" style snake run with rounded hips and valleys. Aside from the high quality design and finish work of the park itself, the location of the park is another large contributor to it's success. This site makes this skatepark more than just a skatepark, but a destination that appeals to the whole family.

Thank you very much for your support of this facility. This is the type of facility all cities should aspire to provide for their communities."

"The skatepark speaks for itself, it’s always packed with skaters, the right design, the right location."
- Rick Sporns
Assistant Manager Parks Design and Development City of Burnaby
“From a skatepark design perspective, the new Metrotown Skatepark (aka Bonsor) offers skaters a clichéd little something for everyone, and offers policy makers another option when considering how to accommodate different types of skaters.- i.e street, tranny, beginner, gnarler. Judging from the smiles and number of skaters, Bonsor is a success. Bonsor is definitely something other cities need to look at when they think about building their own stunt-wood playground."
